It has been rumored that Walt Disney World has contracted with a vendor to replace their aging Mark VI monorails that have been in service since 1989. These monorails were originally built by Bombardier Transportation. Another rumor is that Disney had a fallout with Bombardier Transportation and were having trouble finding a replacement vendor. Sources within the company state that Disney has resolved any issues and has purchased a new monorail fleet.
Due to their age there have been multiple trains that have broke down and large amounts of time where the trains have been shutdown due to maintenance issues. In June of 2017 Monorail Blue caused an evacuation when a piece of the vehicle fell off. In January of 2018 a door on Monorail Red opened after it left the Transportation and Ticket Center (TTC). In June of 2018 Monorail Lime lost air conditioning which forced evacuation of the train. Finally November of 2018 a door fell off Monorail Lime at the Grand Floridian Station.
The biggest tragedy was when 21 year old Monorail pilot Austin Wuennenberg was killed when another train backed into his train while doing a track switch near the TTC.
We are looking forward to the new trains and hopefully will come soon.
