The Festival of the Lion King Closes for Moving
The rumors are correct, the Festival of the Lion King as closed as for the first week of January 2014, but not let you heart be troubled as the number one show is set to return late 2014 in a new facility. Located near Kilimanjaro Safari in Africa, this new home is better suited for the Lion King. You can catch a glimpse of the new theatre as you are walking over the bridge into Africa off to the left over Tusker House.
This move makes way for the new Avatar Land being build where Camp Mickey Minnie once stood. The expansion of the Animal Kingdom will also include a nighttime version of Kilimanjaro Safari as well as a nighttime show similar to World of Color at California Adventure.
Camp Mickey Minnie was originally slated to be a dragon/fantasy section of the park, but due to budget overruns was axed and Camp Mickey Minnie was put in its place. You will notice as you are in the parking lot that one of the lots is named Unicorn and the sign by the bus transportation center has a dragon pictured. Festival of the Lion King was also originally slated to be a temporary show, but due to its popularity has become a staple.
Some of the changes I would expect to see are a move towards a traditional stage show, getting away from the theatre in the round and removing the stage floats. I worked this show for several years and they had many problems with those floats, from kids trying to climb on them, to them being dangerous as you could easily run someone over. I would also guess that the flying scene will be removed as it is very dangerous and hurt actors are expensive.
Look forward to seeing the return of the Festival of the Lion King coming late summer 2014.
