Tips For Riding Out A Hurricane While On Vacation At Walt Disney World Orlando

Disney World Vacation Hurricane Matthew

Hurricanes can be a scary experience for anyone who has not been through one before. The most important thing to remember about hurricanes is that they are very unpredictable. They can become stronger, weaker or turn left or right at any moment, so you can’t take anything for granted. In Florida we prepare for the worst and hope for the best. If you are staying in the local area during the storm we have put a list of a few things that will help your ride out the storm.

  • Listen to the direction of Cast Members. Cast Members will be taking steps to make sure you’re as safe possible, this does not always mean it will be fun. There is nothing they can do about the storm, so keep calm and make the most of a possibly dangerous situation.
  • The attractions are closed for your and the Cast Members’ safety. After the storm has passed, you may ask yourself, why don’t they open everything back up? The reason things are closed is that Cast Members need to drive to WDW and depending on road conditions, they may have to deal with flooded roads, downed powerlines and downed trees as well as cleaning up the mess at their house.
  • Be prepared. As soon as possible, gather a few items to make your time in your room better. Some items that you should have on hand are:
    1. A flashlight with extra batteries
    2. Some bottled water – at least 1 gallon per person
    3. Some snacks
    4. Something to keep everyone entertained, it gets boring sitting in your room.
    5. Rain gear. Umbrellas are not normally a good thing during a hurricane/tropical storm.
  • Don’t drive anywhere unnecessarily. You may have a thought to go to the beach to see the surf or see the damage after the storm, but to keep the roads clear for emergency personal and to keep yourself safe, do not go anywhere until the all clear is given.
  • Fill your car with gas as soon as possible and remove any valuables.
  • Keep your cell phone charged.
  • If you have a bathtub in your room, fill it with water. You can use this water to flush toilets in case water service is cut off.
  • Buy rental car insurance. I normally don’t ever buy this extra insurance, but this may be a time to spend a few bucks to get that rental car insurance in case your rental gets damaged. With falling trees, and blowing stuff there is a good chance this may happen.
  • The airport will most likely close within 8 hours of the high winds hitting. If you have a flight scheduled to leave or arrive during the storm, please contact the airline to see if it is on schedule. You can also check on the status of your flight at the Orland International Airport’s website. https://orlandoairports.net/ If your flight is delayed, we suggest staying at your hotel until the storm has passed.
  • Most importantly, please be patient. Your patience will allow everyone to make the most of the time during the storm. Being impatient will not help the situation, it will just make everyone miserable.

Following these directions will allow everyone to have a safer and happier experience. We know that you didn’t plan on riding out a storm during your stay, but taking the time to prepare will help your time during the storm better and allow you to resume your vacation as soon as possible.

Over the last few years we have been trying to about creating a website that is both fun for us, but has interest for the reader. We thought long and hard, but everything we thought of was not long term interesting to us. We needed something we could love and bring life to it, that is when it hit us, we should start a website about Disney. We knew though that there were many websites out there that already touched on many Disney subjects, we needed something to be different. It dawned on us while building the website that our love of runDisney could be combined with our excitement for all other things Disney to bring to life not only a resource for those who run Disney, but to Disney fans alike. We wanted to bring a bit of magic, and we hope you hang on for the ride as we explore the magical world of Disney World .
